The history of electric shaver brands is not a brief one by any means. There are dozens of brands that have come in and dozens that have gone out. A select few were lucky enough to make it through until today. Others were not - the companies that made these shavers didn't surive to the modern day. There were many reasons for their failures, but sometimes quality wasn't the issue. Many of these old-school shavers had tech that was top of the line at the time. A few of those are covered below.
Action Shave: Action Shave is a'40's brand believed to have been distributed from Elgin, IL. It was sold strictly by mail order. Not much is really known about the brand or the firm behind it except what little information is given here. It is believed to have been made of Swiss parts which could explain the lack of information about their products.
Clip Shave: Clip Shave was a product out of Port Chester, NY and is documented to have sold for around $10 in the late'30's. One distinct feature of this model was the extra long five foot cord it came with and the leather carrying case. Carrying cases were not common on the market at that time.
Packard: No, not the computer. Packard was a brand of electric shaver produced by Lektro Products. Lektro was based in Milford, CT. The first Packard model was introduced in'35 and was an instant hit. The firm ceased operation in the early'50's despite the popularity of its many models of electric shavers that were introduced.
Roto-Shaver: A public firm in New York City, NY brought the Roto-Shaver to the world as a competitor for the Lektro Productions Packard model. Sadly, they disappeared along with their competition in the 50's. No explanation was found as to why, but as with many of these other companies the finances may have been a major concern. Many companies lacked the funding to continue the expensive research and development required for electric shaver manufacturing.
Vornado: This one should not be confused with the more popular company Vornado Air Circulation Systems, Inc because it was in no way affiliated. Some believe the maker, The Two Guys Company, may have ripped off the name though. A lack of lawsuits over the issue leaves us to ponder this situation, but a few people believe one of the founders was distantly related to someone in the company. This could explain how this unique name is associated with two totally different companies.
These are just a few of the vast number of electric shaver brands that have been on the market in the past. Although these didn't make it into today's times, they set the standard for the industry. There ideas have been carried on and improved upon along the way to bring us the great shaving products we have available today. - 30292
